The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have become accustomed to rumours in recent weeks which link Anthony Martial with a move away from the club.
Jose Mourinho’s squad could be set for a major overhaul this summer as the club attempt to make the necessary changes in personnel which are needed to ensure the dominance of their local-rivals does not become a recurring theme in the seasons to come. Although Man United are a financial super power in the footballing world, it seems they will be forced to offload a handful of players this summer in order to accumulate the funds needed to finance the acquisition of new players.
And according to the Daily Mirror, one player who United could be removed from their wage bill this summer is Anthony Martial, although the report suggests the French international will be used as a makeweight in a deal for Christian Pulisic. The American wonderkid is one of Europe’s most sought-after talents and would represent a huge signing for the club both in footballing and commercial terms, and his arrival would also give Marcus Rashford a huge boost in his development.
Rashford’s first-team opportunities have been limited this season due to competition from Martial and Alexis Sanchez more recently, but with Martial out of the picture, he would have a fantastic opportunity to hold down a regular starting berth on the left-side of United’s attack. Pulisic can also operate in Rashford’s position, but he is more naturally suited to a right-sided or central-role, so the England international should be encouraged by the rumours concerning a potential swap deal.
The enormity of Rashford’s potential simply cannot be expressed highly enough as he possesses a natural ability to ghost past players with pace and trickery which very few can demonstrate in world football. Now that he is 20-years-old, he needs to improve his decision-making and his end-product within the final-third, however, he can only make the necessary improvements through regular opportunities.
A swap deal involving Martial and Pulisic is a telling sign that Mourinho plans to start Rashford on a more regular basis next season, so the Red Devils faithful should expect to see a significant improvement in the consistency of their academy product as the campaign unfolds.
