The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern were relieved when their side beat Southampton over the weekend…
Though it was far closer than many of their games this season, getting three points is all that mattered, with Man City hot on the tails of their Manchester rivals.
As he often does, Juan Mata has since taken to his blog to discuss the weekend’s action, and he has been particularly complimentary about Southampton’s performance, whilst also recognising that Man Utd’s showing was far from perfect.
He has written: “The truth is they [Southampton] didn’t deserve to lose but football is like that sometimes. It was not our best game, that’s for sure, but luckily we managed to get the three points”.
He added: “It was not our best game, that’s for sure, but luckily we managed to get the three points”.
Always humble, it’s no real surprise that Mata has been so brutally honest about the game, and in truth his perspective is refreshing in the context of the modern game.
Man Utd were good enough to get something out of the game, but whether they deserved the three points is another topic entirely. Tough wins, though, are often the difference between title winners and title challengers.
For Mata’s part, the Spaniard has been in fine form this season and has made five starts in the Premier League.
Man Utd did well at the weekend, but it was far from their best performance.
In truth, their form has been inconsistent at points this season, but the one consistent thing is their results. They just keep grinding out wins.
If they keep doing that, Mata – and none of his teammates – will care about the manner of their victories.
