The Premier League is home to some of Europe’s best goalkeepers, with the fans in the Transfer Tavern particularly fond of both Thibaut Courtois and David De Gea, but it seems as though another top goalkeeper is reportedly being courted over a potential Premier League switch…
According to Manchester Evening News, both Chelsea and Man Utd have made contact with Atletico Madrid regarding a move for goalkeeper Jan Oblak, with European giants Real Madrid and PSG also said to be interested.
Interestingly, both clubs already have top goalkeepers – in the form of the aforementioned Thibaut Courtois and David De Gea – and so it seems likely that both clubs have lined Oblak up as a contingency plan should either player leave their respective clubs this summer.
You would be hard pressed to find a shot-stopper better than either De Gea or Courtois, but there is no doubting that Oblak is up there with some of Europe’s best. At 24-years-old, his best years are ahead of him, but his relative youth has done nothing to hold him back. He has been a regular for Atletico since 2015, playing 38 times in that campaign, whilst a further 30 appearances came for the Madrid-based outfit last season.
Like De Gea, Oblak’s main quality comes in the form of his shot stopping, with the 24-year-old often near impossible to catch out from distance.
Certainly, nobody in the pub wants to lose their star goalkeeper, but should the worst case scenario occur, there is no doubting that Oblak would be a top replacement.
