The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are divided by their side’s reported pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Ivan Perisic…
The attacking midfielder, who has impressed for Inter Milan this season, has been linked with Man Utd over the last few weeks. Clearly, there is a real need for offensive reinforcement at Old Trafford, but our landlord isn’t so sure that Perisic is the player for Man Utd.
To understand why Perisic might not be a good option, you have to consider what Man Utd need. Clearly, there is a need for a new forward. Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks set to leave this summer, whilst Wayne Roney isn’t really an option anymore – leaving just Marcus Rashford for Mourinho’s selection. Perisic, though, is most effective in the midfield – meaning that he would not solve that issue. Instead, he would look to serve as extra competition for the trio behind Rashford, and it seems evident that there isn’t a real need for that. Currently, Man Utd have Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young available in those roles – and within that group, there isn’t really any space to add more depth.
The only argument that can be made to suggest that he could be squeezed in would be to suggest that Perisic is an upgrade on those players – but that, again, is tough to argue. Of course, his stats this season, for the most part, are impressive, but there are several issues with the Croation. Most notably, his finishing. Man Utd have really struggled with their finishing this season, and that is a key reason as to why the Red Devils have so often been unable to find good results. Perisic has scored regularly this year, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story. Indeed, as stated by WhoScored.com, Perisic’s conversation rate is amongst the worst in Europe when compared to other players with over 10 goals – indicating that he would only add to the problem, not take it away.

Certainly, Perisic would be a decent option to have – but when discussing the costs involved and the context of Man Utd’s current squad, it really makes no sense for Mourinho.
