The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to enjoy a solid run in the Champions League this term. The competition is set to restart for the Red Devils next week, and given that their chances of chasing down Man City at the top of the Premier League are low, a good run in Europe may be the next best thing for Jose Mourinho.
However, ahead of the return of the competition – which in the case of Man Utd is against Sevilla – the Red Devils have received some rather significant news. However, it can be interpreted one of two ways, especially in the context of European competition.
According to ESPN, Eric Bailly is closing in on a return to action, having been back in training since last month. That, inherently, is good for Man Utd, as they’ve really missed him. However, unfortunately for Jose Mourinho, a return in Europe may not happen – with the Ivorian facing a battle to be fit in time for the Sevilla clash.
This is a rather significant blow for Man Utd if true, especially given their side’s display against Newcastle over the weekend. They really struggled defensively, particularly Chris Smalling, and so if fit, Bailly would undoubtedly start for Mourinho. However, the Portuguese could be forced to rely on the disappointing duo of Phil Jones and Smalling once again.
Of course, he’ll be back soon regardless, which is great, but Mourinho could really do with the Ivorian as soon as possible.
Man Utd should have enough to beat Sevilla without Bailly, but as we saw against Newcastle, anything is possible.
They’ll need to put in a good performance, and whilst Mourinho won’t have any concerns about his attack, the defence is a huge area of worry.
If he can’t make it back, Mourinho will have to, somehow, ensure that his disappointing central defenders step up to the plate.
