The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their side can clinch the FA Cup when they face Chelsea at Wembley next weekend to put a silver lining on an otherwise disappointing campaign.
Jose Mourinho’s men have been blown away by their local rivals Manchester City this season in the Premier League. United have been left firmly in the shadow of the dominant Citizens, much to the displeasure of the resident Red Devils propping up our bar.
The United supporters have become accustomed to leaving City in their shadow in recent decades, but recent developments suggest the balance of power might finally be swinging towards the blue half of Manchester. Mourinho and the rest of the United hierarchy will be deeply concerned by the progress City have made this season, so they will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen in the transfer market this summer to challenge the Citizens at the summit of the Premier League next season.
The Red Devils will need to strengthen in various areas of the pitch to instigate the necessary improvement that is needed, but our landlord thinks that they should focus their efforts on landing a quality central-defender, namely Raphael Varane of Real Madrid (valued at £54 million by Transfermarkt).
At 25-years-of-age, Varane has already won 3 Champions League trophies – which could soon become 4 – 2 La Liga titles, 2 Spanish Super Cups and 1 Copa Del Rey, so he’s got the experience needed. The French defender is an integral part of Real Madrid’s squad, but with so many accolades to his name he may decide that the time is right for him to embark on a new challenge, and United will certainly hope so.
Varane is a defender of the highest quality, and he is only bound to get better with more experience in the years to come. Physically Varane is the perfect build for a central defender; he is strong, quick and commanding in the air, and he is also excellent with the ball at his feet.
The experience and prestige Varane would bring to the club would install a level of solidity into United’s defence which hasn’t been seen since Nemanja Vidic was at the heart of the back-four, so United should do everything in their power to convince him to swap Madrid for Manchester this summer.
