This came as a surprise to the Man Utd fans in the Football Transfer Tavern…
Chris Smalling has struggled under Jose Mourinho so far this season – which makes this reported decision even more unexpected.
According to the Sun, Man Utd defender Chris Smalling looks set for a new deal at Man Utd – just weeks after Jose Mourinho publicly outed the English defender for a supposed lack of commitment and fitness.
The defender, who is currently recovering from a broken toe, is reportedly in negotiations for a new deal – despite having 2 years remaining on his current contract.
Despite the unexpected nature of the deal, in reality – it actually makes a lot of sense. Last season was somewhat of a breakout campaign for Smalling – and he really impressed under Louis van Gaal.
This season has been slower for the defender, but our landlord is still backing him to turn it around.
Since joining Man Utd in 2010, Chris Smalling has slowly transformed into one of the Red Devils’ most crucial first team members. He has made 217 appearances in all competitions, and has broken out as one of England’s top central defenders over the last year or 2.
