For the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern, the 2016/17 season has been a poor one…
With the Red Devils currently languishing in 6th place, they haven’t had much to smile about thus far – but a report by Portuguese outlet Mais Futebol has finally brought a smile back to the faces of the Red Devils in attendance.
According to Mais Futebol, Man Utd target Jose Fonte has been given the green light to leave Southampton in January – if a club comes in with an offer of around £5-8 million.
Mourinho was reportedly chasing Fonte over the summer, but Southampton were hesitant to let their captain go. However, with no contract renewal in sight – Fonte is seemingly hoping for an exit, and a ‘pact’ with Southampton will allow him to depart should a club like Man Utd meet Southampton’s demands.
Recent contract talks have reportedly had Man Utd on alert – and now it appears that a deal is becoming increasingly likely.
This has come as fantastic news for the Man Utd fans in the Tavern, many of whom have been clamouring for a bit of defensive leadership in the heart of the defence. With players like Smalling, Rojo and Jones failing to pull their weight this season – they feel that Fonte will bring in some much-needed consistency and determination.
The Southampton fans in the Tavern are on board with this decision too, given that Fonte is entering the twilight of his career. He has been a fantastic servant for the club, and they feel that a move to Man Utd has been on the cards for months now.
