There is only one name on the lips of the fans in the Transfer Tavern, and it is that of Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman, who is currently playing for Atletico Madrid, is a popular man amongst our resident Red Devils, and it’s fair to say that he’s the one player that they would love to see move to their club.
Unfortunately for them, though, the chances of that happening have taken a rather significant hit. According to the Sun, Griezmann’s demands could price Man Utd out of a move for him, with the Frenchman apparently demanding wages of up to £400,000-per-week. Whilst clearly a key target of Jose Mourinho, that kind of salary doesn’t seem viable even for a club like Man Utd, and so that could prove to be an insurmountable hurdle for the club.
Not landing Griezmann would come as a significant blow to Man Utd. For all of their qualities, they’re lacking attacking firepower at present – even with Romelu Lukaku in the team – and Griezmann would certainly help to provide that.
Alas, the chances of the deadly duo linking up appear to now be vastly reduced, with an agreement looking unlikely unless Griezmann reduces his demands.
This is, undoubtedly, a big problem for Man Utd. Mourinho seems desperate to land him, whilst his technique and quality in front of goal would no doubt provide a huge boost for the club, but it’s going to be difficult for them to reach a deal given the circumstances.
Griezmann is a top player, but you have to question whether any single player is worth spending £400,000-per-week on.
The Frenchman would add a lot of quality to this team, but Mourinho must pick his battles, and whilst he may be frustrated to lose out on Griezmann, he will recognise that the Man Utd brass will do all they can to improve his team.
Still, it’s fair to say that Griezmann is still wanted by most in the Transfer Tavern, no matter the cost. Whether a deal happens, though, remains to be seen.
