The Man Utd fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are finding it hard to disagree on this one…
Wayne Rooney has struggled so far this season, with the veteran Englishman struggling to make an impact for club and country.
He is still a fan favourite in the Football Transfer Tavern, but his star is fading fast after a poor start to the Premier League season.
Much of the blame has been attributed to Rooney himself, with several vocal Man Utd fans in the Tavern proclaiming that he is ‘past it’ and that he is no longer good enough to start each and every week.
Several people have gotten involved in the debate and given their perspective on his drop in form – and now Man Utd legend Ryan Giggs has had his say.
He continued: “I feel a little bit sorry for him”, before thrusting part of the blame upon Jose Mourinho’s shoulders: “Towards last season…he was played in that deeper role, then as a No 9 or a No 10 [by Mourinho] – he’s probably a bit confused”.
That last part is particularly interesting, given Giggs appears to be saying that Mourinho’s insistence on playing him in a variety of positions has played a role in Rooney’s poor form.
Despite looking poor in recent weeks, there is no denying how good Rooney has been since his arrival in Man Utd. Having scored 179 Premier League goals for the club so far; he has been unplayable for much of his career.
Our landlord thinks that whilst he may not be at his best right now, he has been one of the best players in English history – and he deserves credit for that.
