The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are viewing next season as the time for Jose Mourinho to bring back their former glories. It’s been a while since the Red Devils were dominant in the English top flight, but progress is certainly being made.
Major acquisitions in the form of the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku have really breathed new life into the squad, and with a few more additions this summer, it may only be a matter of time before trophies return.
One position that needs upgrading is, though, is the left-back spot. Neither Luke Shaw or Ashley Young can hold a candle to the likes of Marcos Alonso, Benjamin Mendy or even, on current form, Andy Robertson – and so something needs to change. Indeed, since the departure of Patrice Evra, this has been a problem for Man Utd, and so it’s time to finally replace him.
You’d struggle to do better than the number one left-back in arguably one of Europe’s best sides, and Alba – who is rated at £54 million by Transfer Markt – certainly deserves that crown. He’s also the number one option for his country, Spain, and so he’s clearly valued highly across Europe.
That’s with good reason, too. Since joining Barcelona in 2012, Alba has continued to assert his dominance down the right-hand side, offering quality both defensively and offensively. Electric pace and crossing make him deadly going forward, and whilst he isn’t the best defender in the world defensively, he’s capable – especially when flanked by someone like Eric Bailly.
Evra brought so much to this team. He brought pace, dribbling, passing, and he also brought leadership. In Alba, Man Utd would be getting all of that back, and whilst at 29-years-old he wouldn’t be thee long-term solution they arguably would like, his experience could be invaluable.
