Man Utd must use reported potential agreement as a springboard for their best summer in years

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the summer transfer window. It’s been a very productive season for the Red Devils, and whilst they haven’t quite been able to challenge Man City at the top, perhaps another strong summer showing could help close the gap.

Fortunately, that summer could get off to the perfect start, with the Sun reporting that star goalkeeper David De Gea is set to land a new deal at Old Trafford.

This is huge news for the Red Devils. De Gea is, undoubtedly one of Europe’s best goalkeepers. Providing sensational shot-stopping, brilliant aerial dominance and great agility – alongside excellent leadership – the Spaniard has quickly emerged as Man Utd’s most important player

However, this new deal will mean nothing if Man Utd aren’t able to land more top-tier talents as they have over the last few years. The Red Devils are at a crossroads, and whilst they’ve spent big in recent years, that will all be for nothing if they don’t continue in that vein.

De Gea has been loyal to the club, and if this deal is confirmed his decision to renew will be due in large part to loyalty. We all know, though, that new deals mean little in football in real terms, and so if Man Utd don’t quickly begin to win things, that could all change come next summer, particularly if Real Madrid coming calling.

Man Utd must also take advantage of the momentum. Tieing down one of Europe’s best for half a decade is as good as any new signing, and so Jose Mourinho should take that encouragement and put further effort into recruiting more talent. If they manage to tie down De Gea, whilst also bringing in 1-2 huge European names, then the Red Devils could genuinely have their best team in years.

However, if they fail to invest and another non-title challenging year follows – who knows where Man Utd could be in 12 months.
