The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have always looked towards Nemanja Matic as a reliable hand in the Chelsea first team…
Though he is rarely a spectacular player, his relatively consistent form since moving to Stamford Bridge has made him a real favourite amongst supporters.
They were surprised to hear reports emanating from the Sun, then, that suggest that the Serbian wants to leave the club this summer. According to the Sun, Matic is keen on linking up with Jose Mourinho again at Man Utd, with the Serbian fearing that his Chelsea career is coming to a close.
Indeed, whilst the Chelsea fans would disagree with that sentiment, they do certainly understand his point of view. Matic, who is rated at £29.75 million by Transfer Markt, lost his place slightly towards the end of last season, with Cesc Fabregas moving in alongside N’Golo Kante, and that is a situation that is likely to worsen for Matic next season. Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is linked with a move to Chelsea, and his potential arrival could see Matic slip further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
For Man Utd, though, the deal makes a lot of sense. Matic is a proven player in the Premier League, and his defensive qualities will allow Paul Pogba to flourish.
Our landlord certainly thinks that Chelsea should think twice before securing this deal, though, with many in the pub concerned that selling to Man Utd would be a poor move. Not only would the Blues be losing a top player, but they would also be improving a rival – and this is something that would not be wise from a Chelsea point of view.
