Man Utd: Red Devils considering move for Benfica’s Ruben Dias

Manchester United could be about to step up their interest in signing Benfica’s Ruben Dias, according to a report by Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old defender this summer, should they lose Victor Lindelof to Barcelona.

Dias is thought to have a €66million (£59.2m) release clause in his contract and the Red Devils are believed to have asked about negotiating a deal for a figure lower than that.

However, it is claimed Benfica are not prepared to offer them a discount and are actually trying to raise the clause to €88m (£79m) as president Luis Felipe Vieira knows the current one is not out of reach for Man Utd.

Dias would have to be considered a brilliant addition to Man Utd’s defence if they were able to sign him this summer. The Red Devils’ leaky defence has been a bit of an issue and clearly needs tightening up as conceding 54 last season in the Premier League was not good enough.

The 22-year-old, who was a mainstay in the side, had an excellent campaign for Benfica last year, recording some rather encouraging statistics. According to WhoScored, the Portugal international managed to make an average of 1.4 tackles per 90 mins and 0.9 interceptions in his 32 Liga NOS appearances.

In comparison, Lindelof (who was their top centre-back last season per the stats recorded) managed to make 1.3 tackles and 0.8 interceptions in the 30 Premier League matches he featured in. With those figures, it is difficult to imagine United allowing the Sweden international to leave for Barcelona this summer though.

The Portugal international fits the bill in regards to the types of players Solskjaer is looking to bring in, as the manager is keen to inject youth into the first-team – seen with the additions of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka already.

£59.2m might be a hefty figure to splash out on a player as young as Dias; however, it could potentially be a lot more if Benfica get their way. If Man Utd have that money readily available to them, it might just be worth getting involved with an offer as soon as possible.
