The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that they haven’t seen the last of Zlatan Ibrahimovic…
A cruel injury blow forced him to miss out on the last few weeks of action last season, and given that his contract at Old Trafford has now expired, many in the pub were concerned that that would be it for the Swede.
However, according to Graeme Bailey of the Gambling Times, that is not the case. Bailey reports that Man Utd are preparing a fresh contract offer for the Swedish forward, with belief said to be ‘high’ at Old Trafford that he will end the next season with the Red Devils.
The recent arrival of Romelu Lukaku was largely perceived as Man Utd’s method of replacing Ibrahimovic, but it appears as though Jose Mourinho is still not content with the options at his disposal.
Any move remains some way off, it appears, but with Ibrahimovic using the facilities at Man Utd’s training ground in an effort to aid his recovery, relations between the two parties are clearly very good.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic may no longer be a youngster, but the forward is ageing like a fine wine, and he proved last season that he could still do it at the highest level.
Mid-season additions are typically viewed as panic buys, but the prospect of Ibrahimovic turning up at the mid-point in the campaign would certainly be a welcomed boost for the Red Devils – particularly given the vast experience that the Swede has.
Mourinho’s squad is full of quality, but it lacks experience, and Ibrahimovic could certainly use his knowledge of European competition to aid the Red Devils’ continental trophy hunt.
It’s a risk, banking on an injured 35-year-old, but the Swede is clearly getting in better condition, and a short-term deal may benefit all parties.
