According to the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern, Michael Carrick is an Old Trafford legend…
It’s hard to disagree with them, of course, given just how good the Englishman has been during his time in Manchester. He’s been a regular for much of his tenure, and whilst the regularity of his performances has slowed down in recent years, the performances themselves have arguably only gotten better.
However, at 36-years-old, it’s about time that Man Utd look towards the future, and if the Daily Star is to be believed, Carrick may not be in Mourinho’s long-term plans.
According to the Daily Star, Man Utd have begun plans to succeed Carrick – with a couple of midfielders recently scouted in an effort to find an adequate solution. Radja Nainggolan and Saul Niguez are reportedly the players in question – with scouts in attendance to watch them during the Roma vs Atletico Madrid game last week.
Both players, of course, would bring a lot to the Man Utd midfield. Nainggolan’s powerful running and lethal ability in front of goal would be a massive bonus, whilst Saul Niguez’s tackling and defensive ability would add some real quality in the heart of the pitch.
They’re different players with very different qualities, but they’re both very classy and dominant in the midfield – and so they would certainly fill the gap left behind by Carrick were he to leave.
Carrick’s time is coming to an end, there’s no doubt about that, and so it’s wise from Man Utd to consider fresh options.
Niguez would definitely be a better solution if the club are looking long-term, but Nainggolan is arguably one of Europe’s best midfielders at present, and so it’s a tough call to decide which would be better suited.
They’re getting their scouting in early, though, and so when the time comes – Mourinho will know who to move for.
