The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for one more big signing before the end of the summer…
With a number of key transfers this summer, notably Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku, there is a certain degree of satisfaction amongst our Man Utd supporting punters. They’ve signed some top players, and their first team is now arguably one of Europe’s strongest.
However, the Premier League season is long, and so Jose Mourinho needs all the strength he can get.
That may go a long way to explaining reports linking the Red Devils with a potential move for Ezequiel Garay. According to Super Deporte, Man Utd representatives were in attendance to watch Las Palmas take on Valencia on Friday, with a keen eye being placed upon the performance of the defender.
A host of scouts are said to have been watching on, but Man Utd are noted as having a particularly strong interest.
They have spent well this summer, but the defence is still arguably an area of concern. The likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones aren’t the sort of defenders to terrify opposing attackers, and so Jose Mourinho would be wise to recruit a bit of star power.
They don’t come much better than Garay, with the 30-year-old proving his quality for the best part of a decade.
Like Nemanja Matic, he is a player for the present rather than the future, but Mourinho clearly wants immediate success, and he can get that by signing veterans like Garay.
Whilst no move is imminent, Man Utd’s interest is clearly concrete.
Garay would be a great signing. A balance needs to be struck between youth and experience, and Garay would certainly fall under the latter category.
That said, he’s still got a few more years in him, and whilst he may not be turning out at Old Trafford in 5 years like Pogba or Martial, he’ll certainly play a key role for a few years should he join.
