The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern hope that their side’s spending isn’t over yet…
It doesn’t appear to be, with Belgian publication De Morgen reporting that Man Utd scouts will be in attendance for the upcoming Belgian Pro League game between Antwerp and Anderlecht. It is noted that they will be there to keep an eye on midfielder Leander Dendoncker, who reportedly has a €38 million (£33.8 million) price tag on his head. Jose Mourinho is said to be a big fan of the player.
Significantly, there is no real mention of an imminent bid from Man Utd, nor is there any suggestion that the Red Devils could make a move this summer, but it is evident that Jose Mourinho is very keen on the player.
A regular for Anderlecht, the midfielder was a key player for the Belgian side last season, and he is likely to continue in that vein during the next campaign. A defensive midfielder by trade, he is efficient at the back and at spraying balls forward – which could well by why Man Utd are said to be monitoring him.
Man Utd’s need for midfield depth is clear, with the duo of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba desperately needing a new partner ahead of the new season.
A move for Nemanja Matic has been touted, but this fresh report would suggest that Mourinho is considering his options ahead of the new season.
Dendoncker would certainly fit the bill, and whilst he lacks the experience of Matic in England, his form in Belgium has been stellar as of late.
He would certainly be a riskier option, but given his relative youth (22-years-old) and comparative price-tag, a move makes sense according to our landlord.
