The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are divided on the prospect of Marouane Fellaini turning out for the Red Devils next season. The Belgian’s contract at Old Trafford expires this summer, and naturally, given that it is edging towards its conclusion, talk is turning to whether he will agree fresh terms at the club.
Naturally, a player like Fellaini is always going to generate division amongst fans. He’s fairly one-dimensional, and he doesn’t provide the exciting, charismatic style that many of Man Utd’s other stars do.
However, despite that, the Belgian is as important as ever to Jose Mourinho, and so our landlord thinks that the Red Devils must offer him a sufficient contract to keep him at the club for another year or two at least.
After all, Fellaini proved his worth and his influence for Man Utd over the weekend against Arsenal. They looked to be settling for a draw until the big Belgian rose above everyone else to power home a last-minute winner. That sort of impact highlights the high level of influence that he has on this team.
He’s able to impact games more directly than most in the squad, with his height and physical presence making him an entirely different prospect for opposition teams.
You also have to consider how helpful he can be as both an offensive and defensive asset. He proved over the weekend what he can do going forward, but defensively, he arguably has even more to offer. A brilliant tackler, he’s fantastic at breaking up play, whilst his aerial dominance is evident – making him a fantastic asset when defending corners and free-kicks.
He’s certainly not a player that will dazzle every single week. But in terms of efficiency, Man Utd would seriously struggle to do much better. It would be a huge risk to let him leave, as he’s nearly impossible to replace.
