Man Utd should sign this £10.8m-rated defender to help bring the best out of Bailly – agreed?

The Man Utd defence clearly needs improving, and our resident Red Devils are eager to see a few major defensive acquisitions this summer. Jose Mourinho, of course, hasn’t been afraid to spend big since moving to Old Trafford, and so the prospect of a big name or two coming in this summer seems pretty likely.

It appears as though the Red Devils are already putting in the groundwork to begin improving the defence this summer, too, with the Sun reporting that a scout was in attendance to watch Swansea defender Alfie Mawson last week.

Though not a name that is likely to delight our Man Utd regulars, our landlord is backing the Englishman, if he were to join, to be the perfect signing for Man Utd and, in particular, Eric Bailly.

Mawson, who is rated at £10.8 million by Transfer Markt, has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders over the last year or so. Whilst Swansea have struggled to remain solid, the Englishman has really come of age at the back, and he was one of the shining lights at the club during the early stages of the 2017/18 season. Standing at a towering 6ft1, Mawson is a real unit in the air, whilst he’s also incredibly comfortable with the ball at his feet. Able to play out from the back, and clear the ball when necessary, his playstyle is indicative of a player with far more experience than he currently has – and that’s a testament to his quality.

He’d certainly come in and start in the defence, potentially as a partner for the ever-impressive Eric Bailly. The Ivorian hasn’t quite been at his best this season, but on his day, there is arguably nobody better. It’s fair to say that Bailly has been let down by those around him, and if he had a bit more talent to rely on in the defence, then he would be a far better player as a result. Mourinho hasn’t been able to continually pick the same defenders lately, given their poor form, and so if Mawson can come in and remain consistent, then the Red Devils could have found their defensive pairing for the next few years –  which is just what they need.

As a result, not only would bringing in Mawson improve Man Utd, but it would also be of massive benefit to Bailly – and that’s a prospect that the Red Devils simply cannot turn down.
