Man Utd shouldn’t sign this reported target under any circumstances – here’s why

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving reports linking their side with a move for former forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic…

The Swedish forward impressed for the Red Devils last season before a cruel injury ended his campaign, and subsequently his time at Man Utd, early.

However, there has been talk over the last few days of a potential return. Whilst he is still recovering from injury, the prospect of a mid-season return for the Swede is certainly enticing the fans in the Transfer Tavern.

However, whilst the move would certainly generate a lot of fan support, our landlord is firmly against any deal being done.

On the surface, it does make sense in that he impressed last year, and he’ll be available on a free transfer should he arrive. However, his wage demands will continue to be stratospheric, and given that Man Utd have spent freely this summer, you have to wonder whether he is worth the financial outlay over the course of the season.

This is particularly relevant when you consider it within the context of Man Utd’s squad. At present, Mourinho has both Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku in the mix. Both of these players are excellent, and would likely start for the majority of the other sides in the Premier League. They’re already having to compete with each other, and if you throw Zlatan into the mix – who will likely demand a starting berth – it starts to become a problem.

If nothing else, he will likely be thrust into second choice under Mourinho, pushing Rashford back in the line. Given his age and the need for him to play regular football, this would be terrible for the Englishman. He’s at such a crucial stage in his development, he really doesn’t need Ibrahimovic to battle with.

Ibrahimovic’s experience would be great, and he is clearly a top player, but Man Utd need to move forwards – not backwards.
