The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are still waiting for Jose Mourinho to bring in a new defender or two this summer. The defence has been a problem area for Mourinho at Old Trafford, and it’s something that he needs to solve this summer.
He has been trying, though, it seems – and according to the Manchester Evening News, Toby Alderweireld is the player that they’re currently in discussions for. However, the report also notes that Bayern Munich have revealed that Jerome Boateng is available for £50 million – indicating that Man Utd could have a very interesting alternative to Alderweireld.
Indeed, our landlord actually thinks that Boateng would be a better choice, and so if the Red Devils do miss out on the Tottenham defender, a move for Boateng would make them forget all about the Belgian.
After all, Boateng brings something that Man Utd lack at the moment – experience. He’s won European cups, he’s won titles, he’s won World Cups – he truly has won it all. Nobody in the Man Utd squad can rival his knowledge and experience of winning Europe’s biggest prizes, and as Jose Mourinho looks to bring the Premier League title back to Old Trafford, that is an important characteristic.
Furthermore, despite his injury problems, he’s still a sensational defender. He’s quick, he’s agile, he’s aggressive, he’s a brilliant tackler, he’s a good passer – the German is, in fact, arguably the complete defender, and so he’d be a hugely valuable asset for the club.
In particular, Boateng would finally give Eric Bailly the partner that he needs at Old Trafford, and so for the Red Devils, the German would be a brilliant fit.
