It's fair to say that this season has been a mixed bag so far for Man Utd. The Red Devils haven't quite made the desired impact in the Premier League this season, and their goal of a title-challenge and a top-four finish both seem to be a long way off.

However, the season is still young, and provided that they are able to pick up a few results over the next month or two, the Red Devils could yet turn things around.

Fortunately, they're apparently willing to spend to make that happen, according to the Guardian, with a kitty of up to £100 million apparently available in January.

There are a number of spots in the Man Utd team that need improving, and in doing so, Ed Woodward could turn them back into top-four contenders.

The defence is undoubtedly the area in most need of improvement, and bringing in someone like Harry Maguire, who is rated at £40.5 million by Transfer Markt, could help transform the team.

Maguire has been one of the Premier League's best central defenders over the last year or so. Despite playing for a mid-table team like Leicester, the Englishman has defended robustly and consistently, and his stock is only rising at present. Standing at a towering 6ft3, the giant defender offers tremendous physical quality at the back, and in a league as challenging as the Premier League, that's something that cannot be undervalued. Given how lacking the Man Utd defence is with regards to physicality, that's likely to be something that Mourinho wants.

He's also a technical player, despite his stature, with the Leicester man able to play out from the back brilliantly.

Man Utd have spent big on foreign defenders over the years, but none of them have been able to adjust to the Premier League efficiently. There would be no such concerns with Maguire, who is a defender that is built for the English top flight. His performances at the World Cup proved his quality, and a move to a club like Man Utd would be a natural step.
