It’s difficult to break into any top Premier League side in the modern era, and that’s particularly true of Man Utd. The Red Devils have one of the most expensive squads in Europe, and that, naturally makes it more difficult for youngsters to get a chance.
However, in Man Utd’s final league game of the season against Watford, perhaps Jose Mourinho should afford at least one young player an opportunity. It’s a game that isn’t likely to have any impact on the Premier League table, and so – especially with an FA Cup final on the horizon – it makes sense to give an opportunity or two.
One player that the stage could be set for is young Angel Gomes. He made his debut at the end of last season off the bench, but perhaps it’s time for him to make a breakthrough in the form of a position in the starting eleven.
After all, Man Utd’s attackers haven’t been particularly efficient in recent weeks. Alexis Sanchez’ mixed form has been well documented, whilst the likes of Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have all enjoyed moments of brilliance that have been marred by moments of irrelevancy.
Gomes, then, certainly wouldn’t make things any worse for Man Utd. Indeed, he has the potential to have quite the opposite impact.
A tricky attacker, he’s incredibly skilful with the ball at his feet, and he’s able to dribble and dance around defenders like few other players can. What’s more, at just 17-years-old, the sooner he makes his breakthrough the better. He’s only going to get better, and so if he can make an impact whilst still a teenager, then the sky really will be the limit.
If Jose Mourinho is to stay at Man Utd long-term, he needs to begin to prepare for the future. The fact of the matter is that Gomes has as good a chance as any to be the future of the club, and so giving a chance sooner rather than later makes perfect sense.
