Manager plays down transfer speculation in potentially big boost for Celtic

Celtic supporters in the Transfer Tavern have taken the last few days to look back on their team’s hugely successful 2017, which saw the club dominate Scottish football to end the year as holders of all three domestic competitions.

Brendan Rodgers’ men eased to the Scottish Premiership title by dropping just eight points all season, eventually ending up a staggering 30 points clear of second place Aberdeen, and 39 clear of Old Firm rivals Rangers. The Bhoys also won the Scottish Cup back in May with a 2-1 success over Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen at Hampden Park, before defending their Scottish League Cup crown in November with a 2-0 win over Motherwell, thus completing the clean sweep of domestic honours in 2017.

Subsequently, many of our resident Bhoys fans have been looking back fondly at 2017, and they are also likely to be encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which details comments from Brighton manager Chris Hughton regarding their reported interest in Celtic striker Moussa Dembele.

The 21-year-old made the move to Parkhead back in the summer of 2016 and he has since been in sparkling goal-scoring form with 40 goals in just 70 games for Rodgers’ men, 32 of which coming in their record-breaking campaign last term.

Unsurprisingly, interest has since been mounting in the France youth international, with the likes of Manchester United thought to be keeping tabs, yet recent reports have suggested that Hughton’s Brighton were in pursuit of the forward, talk the Seagulls boss has recently quashed.

He said: ‘There’s been huge speculation, certainly on this particular one.

‘There were certainly some quotes going back a little while ago about figures and about some communication between the two clubs.

‘Categorically, there hasn’t been any communication between the two clubs.’

And these comments are sure to delight our resident Celtic fans, with it plausible that the 21-year-old could well remain at the club beyond the January window after all.

Landlord’s verdict: Moussa Dembele’s sensational form for Celtic last term played a huge part in their treble-winning success, and as such drew interest from several clubs around Europe.

And one of those thought to be particularly keen on the 21-year-old were Premier League side Brighton, only for Seagulls chief Chris Hughton to quash rumours of a move for the France youth international.

And with Brendan Rodgers’ side having been in the business of selling their best players in the last ten years or so, this is sure to come as a big boost to the Bhoys, who will hope that Dembele can continue producing the goods and inspiring them to trophies for many years to come.
