Manchester City ace took pay cut to seal Etihad Stadium exit

Micah RichardsThe Football Transfer Tavern is a little quiet this evening but reactions to all the summer’s big moves are still seeping through.

And according to talkSPORT, the publication are reporting that Micah Richards turned down a new and improved contract offer at the Etihad Stadium in favour of a move to Italy.

The former England international defender has taken a pay cut and signed for Serie A club Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal and that move could yet be made permanent if all goes to plan at the Stadio Artemi Franchi.

And Richards, who made just nine appearances in the last two seasons, admits it was hard but insists it was a move that he had to make.

He said: “It’s been a frustrating 18 months, two years at Manchester City. It’s my club and I’ve given blood, sweat and tears for them and, when you found yourself not playing, it’s hard.

“I was offered a new contract and I had a long think about it. I was offered more money at City but it’s not about the money. It’s about playing football now.

“It was so, so hard to leave and it was an emotional day for me because I’ve been at City for so long and it is my club. Hopefully in the future I’ll be back in some capacity because they are a club close to my heart.”
