As Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero enters his twilight years, the time has arguably come for the club to identify a future successor.
The Argentine’s contribution to this City golden era has been unprecedented, becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer whilst bagging arguably the most important strike in the club’s history on the last day of the 2011/2012 season.
If ever a player warranted a statue, Aguero is that man.
However, with the 31-year-old slowly approaching that stage in his career, the Citizens have already begun identifying who could be his potential successor – at least according to Calciomercato via Sport Witness.
Reports suggest that Inter Milan forward (and compatriot of Aguero’s) Lautaro Martinez fits the bill – possessing a similar playing style whilst also showing potential to emulate the City striker in the future.
Martinez wasn’t exactly prolific for Inter last season, at least nowhere near Aguero’s standards, scoring six goals and grabbing two assists in 27 appearances – but so far this campaign he has improved a fair amount.
This season, the 22-year-old has bagged two goals and an assist in seven league games – looking to replicate the form he possessed at Racing Club – where he shone with 13 strikes in 20 outings, as per WhoScored.com.
Luring Martinez away from the San Siro will be no easy task for the champions, with the club putting a £111m release clause on his contract.
If the claims are to be believed, City will monitor the situation and potentially come in with a bid depending on the striker’s form over the next two seasons – although they are not the only ones in pursuit.
Barcelona are also looking to the forward as a potential future replacement for Luis Suarez, who himself isn’t getting any younger.
