Manchester Evening News have a shocking, sensational claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
They claim that two of Manchester City’s star players are joining the battle to convince Lionel Messi to sign for the club.
The Barcelona player once looked like he would finish his career at the Camp Nou, with unwavering loyalty and the love of both the board and fans.
Now however, after a rather public outburst last week directed at Javier Fous, not to mention the claim from Spanish football experts that president Sandro Rosell sees summer signing Neymar as the new jewel in the Catalan’s crown, Messi leaving the club is not as unthinkable as it once seemed
We are all aware of Manchester City’s financial clout and the club see Messi as the biggest statement they could make and one that would propel them to the forefront of European football.
Messi’s nternational team-mate Pablo Zabaleta claimed “He asked me a lot about City. It’s something we often talk about.”
This was backed up by Sergio Aguero, who weighed in and claimed: “Yes, he should come to City. Then we’ll definitely play together! City should buy him!”
As one of our punters quips, anyone would love to have Messi, and former team-mate Yaya Toure claimed that: “If it’s to come to City, I hope Messi can leave Barca,”
Clearly he has the players seal of approval!
Will we ever see Messi on these shores or will he see out his career as a one club man? Let us know your thoughts below.
