The Manchester City fans here in the Transfer Tavern were delighted when they heard the news that Fernandinho had penned a new contract with the club. The 32-year-old has been brilliant as a defensive midfielder for the Citizens since his 2013 switch from Shakhtar Donetsk.
And, according to a report by The Telegraph, Manchester City could be about to sign another Brazilian defensive midfielder from Shakhtar Donetsk as they look to the long term future. Fred is one of Manchester City’s main transfer targets and they are closing in on a deal to bring him to the club in the summer transfer window.
It is believed that Manchester City would be paying in the region of £40m for the 6-cap Brazil international, who is able to play further forward in central midfield too. He is expected to arrive to provide competition for Fernandinho.
The 24-year-old is diminutive in stature but is rated very highly, having been at Shakhtar Donetsk since 2013 when the Ukrainian giants brought him in to replace Fernandinho in 2013. Fred is hoping that a move to the Premier League will further his international ambitions as he eyes more caps for the national team.
With Yaya Toure likely to leave in the summer, Manchester City need a new central midfielder to provide Fernandinho with some competition. Fred is a highly skillful central midfielder who suits Guardiola’s style of play. And the chance to join one of the best teams and managers in Europe will surely be too tempting for Fred.
