The Daily Mail have an intriguing story for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they think that Manchester City are about to end their interest in Real Madrid’s Pepe.
The Portuguese international defender is well known by new Citizens manager Manuel Pellegrini given they worked together during the City manager’s spell at Real Madrid.
It had been thought that Pellegrini wanted a defender to come in and shore up the back four who of course looked a tad shaky last term.
Now it seems that the manager has all but given up on that trail of thought and it seems a good thing too – Pepe has been convinced by Carlo Ancelotti that his future lies at Real Madrid.
The defender of course fell out with former manager Jose Mourinho at the end of last season and given the rise of Raphael Varane, his future looked to be in doubt, hence the swoop from City – yet now attentions at the Etihad Stadium have turned to utilising cash for Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic instead.
Quite a turn around considering Jovetic is a forward and would cost more than the £15 million City were prepared to bid yet as we all know, landing Jovetic is a lot harder than originally thought – as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger found out.
Should Manchester City have pushed harder for Pepe’s signature this summer? Let us know your thoughts below.
