Manchester City face serious competition to land long-term target

FernandoManchester City supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were looking pleased after watching their side’s 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion last night.

The return of Sergio Aguero has provided hope that they could yet catch Liverpool in the title race although a few have already given up hope and are looking forward to next season.

talkSPORT now have some interesting speculation for these City fans as they report that Napoli want to sign Citizens target Fernando and are willing to pay him a salary worth £2.4 million a season.

The Brazilian midfielder came very close to moving to the Etihad Stadium during the January transfer window as part of a deal along with team-mate Eliaquim Mangala. However the proposed transfer collasped after the Portuguese giants demanded more than £40 million for the combined transfers.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini was ready to offer the 27-year-old a pre-contract agreement as his contract expired in June but instead he penned new three-year-contract at Porto.

Today’s speculation indicates that, despite this, he could still be available in the summer with Rafael Bentiez eyeing up the enforcer for his Napoli side with a mega-wage package on offer.

They face domestic competition from Juventus and Inter Milan but believe their £2.4 million-a-season package will persuade him to move to the Stadio San Paolo.

Are Manchester City destined to lose out on the signing of Fernando? Do City even need him or is Javi Garcia sufficient enough as back up? Let us know your thoughts below.
