There is news for Manchester City fans in the Football Transfer Tavern as BBC Sport report that the club will not be completing the signing of Porto duo Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando before the 11pm deadline tonight.
It had been early reported in the tavern that City were ready to bring the Porto defender and midfielder to the Etihad Stadium, with a deal thought to be possible at around £35 million.
As is a common occurrence on transfer deadline day, the Citizens were understood to have a private plane ready to bring them to England, but it was later cancelled as the deal stalled.
City were interested in 22-year-old French central defender Mangala, and Fernando, a 26-year-old Brazilian defensive midfielder, as the Portuguese club tried to solve some of the financial concerns.
However Porto wanted a fee in excess of £40m for the pair and City had no interest in meeting that demand. That doesn’t mean their interest is completely finished with reports suggesting that City’s interest could be revived in the summer.
It now seems that City have wrapped up their business for the window, with in-demand central defender Joleon Lescott set to remain at the club despite reported loan interest from West Ham.
Did the Citizens need to further strengthen in January or does Pellegrini have a good enough side to ensure success? Let us know your thoughts below.
