Manchester City fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are used to seeing exciting players from faraway places join their club in multi-million pound deals.
But today the Daily Mail claim that Manchester City’s next signing could come from slightly closer to home.
They reckon Manuel Pellegrini is lining up a swoop for Stoke City fans favourite Ryan Shawcross after he was voted the club’s player of the year following a great season at the Britannia Stadium.
Mark Hughes has no interest in selling Shawcross but his owners may be powerless to resist should Manchester City offer them a figure around the £12 million mark.
The Citizens are currently in a battle to retain enough homegrown players to please the authorities with a host of English players set to leave the club.
Scott Sinclair and Gareth Barry have already been told their deals with not be renewed and players such as Micah Richards, Joleon Lescott, James Milner and Jack Rodwell are all set to leave with regular playing time all at the top of their list of priorities.
But Manchester City will be rivalled for his signature by Alan Pardew’s Newcastle outfit who still have the transfer funds from Yohan Cabaye’s sale back in January.
Manchester City fans. Would Shawcross just become the latest Jack Rodwell or Scott Sinclair if he were to be signed? Let us know your thoughts below.
