There is a rather sensational claim from the Daily Express today for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern who claim that Manchester City could well be set to make a bid for Portuguese international Pepe.
The controversial Real Madrid defender has been considering his future for some time now and given the fact that Raphael Varane is now firmly established as one of the first choice centre backs for Los Blancos, Pepe’s future has been plunged into further doubt.
Manuel Pellegrini of course knows the defender well from his ill-fated spell in charge at Real Madrid and it could well be the case that a reunion is on the cards for the pair. City are even willing to double Pepe’s current salary to around £3 million per year.
City are looking for defensive reinforcements and no longer see Joleon Lescott as a first choice option at the back and are willing to make a £20 million bid for Pepe, something Real Madrid could well be tempted to accept, especially given the club are looking to rebuild their image after a poor couple of seasons.
Pepe is often targeted as one of the main offenders – and given his disciplinary record is only second to Sergio Ramos, that’s not exactly surprising.
Will City move for Pepe this summer or is this rumour best served as fish and chip paper? Rate this rumour below.
