Manchester City’s cross-town rivals have appeared to join the race for long time City target Sandro Tonali, with Manchester United scouts being sent to watch the youngster.
The midfielder has seemingly turned heads throughout Europe’s top divisions with his consistently outstanding performances for Brescia in recent seasons, most notably playing a key part in their recent promotion to Serie A.
Tonali made 34 appearances for Le Rondinelle during their incredible 2018/2019 campaign, scoring three goals and providing seven assists (via Transfermarkt), proving crucial to Brescia’s Serie B title win.
As a result, the 19-year-old has attracted major interest from Europe’s top clubs, including Premier League champions City, and now rivals United.
The Citizens reportedly sent scouts over to Italy in order to keep tabs on the youngster a week ago, watching from the stands as Brescia drew 0-0 at home to Fiorentina. In the past, he’s been compared to legendary countryman Andrea Pirlo by Calciomercato due to his style as a deep-lying playmaker and Total Football Analysis note his ability to attract ‘the attention of both the forwards and the midfielders when he’s positioned between their defensive lines.’
Given that City missed out on Jorginho in the summer of 2018, perhaps he could be the answer at the Etihad.
Still, now, it seems United have also went to assess the Italian, with a report from The Sun claiming they are now in the hunt for his signature along with Serie A giants Inter Milan.
Indeed, with the likes of Fernandinho and David Silva reaching the twilight stages of their careers – it could be time for fresh young faces to start making their way to the Etihad.
However, if City are truly serious about signing Tonali, it looks like they’ll face stiff competition from their arch rivals – who are also looking to add some quality to a currently questionable midfield.
