Manchester City fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are growing concerned about their lack of options in defence ahead of a highly competitive Premier League and European campaign.
They are pleased with news emerging from the Daily Star that the Citizens are preparing a £30 million bid for Porto centre back Eliaquim Mangala in the January transfer window.
New City boss Manuel Pellegrini wants to increase his current defensive options, and is facing something of an injury crisis with three defenders currently out injured for the next few weeks.
While 32-year-old Argentine international Martin Demichelis was brought in from Atletico Madrid late on in the transfer window, he has already depressingly picked up an injury in training, keeping him out for several weeks.
Mangala was known to be a target for City over the summer, as well as the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, and it is understood that he is Pellegrini’s first choice to solve his defensive problems.
The 22-year-old Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world, and has a buy out clause of £40 million in his contract with Porto, though City will hope to land him for £30 million with a possible £10 million to follow in add-ons.
This could mark the end of Pellegrini’s pursuit for one of his top summer targets – Real Madrid centre back Pepe and it now appears that the Portuguese international could sign a new deal at the Bernabeu.
Will City manage to lure the young Frenchman to the Etihad Stadium this January? Let us know your thoughts below.
