The Daily Mail have got Manchester City fans all excited here in the Football Transfer Tavern today as they note that the club are set to finalise a deal for Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic.
The 23-year-old was initially thought to be the top target for Arsene Wenger this summer and much of the talk about the player in the tavern revolved around the Gunners.
Now the Montenegrin forward seems to be on his way to link up with Manuel Pellegini at the Etihad Stadium after the official Fiorentina Twitter page @ACF_Fiorentina, noted that: “An agreement has been reached with Manchester City Football Club for the permanent sale of the player Stevan Jovetic.”
The deal for the forward will take the club’s spending to around £100 million this summer to follow the signings of Fernandinho and also Jesus Navas and on the day they officially finalised the deal for Sevilla forward Alvaro Negredo.
Despite a second successive loss for the club on their pre-season tour, the departures of Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez do not look like being significant now and the two marquee forwards will – in Pellegrini’s opinion- see the club challenge substantially for the top prizes next season.
Wenger has now seen yet another target slip through his grasp as City agreed the deal worth £25.8 million and as one of our punters quips, they may now switch their full attentions to luring Luis Suarez to London.
Do Manchester City now boast the strikeforce to rival Robin van Persie and Manchester United for the title? Let us know your thoughts below.
