Manchester City set to rival Chelsea for 28-year-old defender

BonucciWe reported yesterday here in the Transfer Tavern that incoming Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was keen on the signing of Juventus central defender Leonardo Bonucci.

News has emerged today via the landlord’s copy of the Daily Mail that the Blues will face competition for the signing of the Italian defender from Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola will enter the Etihad Stadium in the summer and will no doubt revamp his squad in order to make an assault on the Premier League and Champions League.

One of the Spaniard’s main priorities will be strengthen a defence which on occasions this season has been found wanting and Guardiola looks set to turn his attentions towards Bonucci, who could join the Citizens for £25 million.

One City fan is checking his bets from the weekend with a pint of the landlord’s finest real ale and he thinks Bonucci would be a major improvement on City’s current crop, and believes he could form a formidable partnership with Vincent Kompany.
