The Football Transfer Tavern is filled with speculation this morning with Mail Online reporting that new Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is set to make a last ditch bid.
The Citizens boss will make one last attempt to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe as he seeks to solve his defensive crisis before the season kicks off at the weekend.
City have already lost young Serbian centre back Matija Nastasic for the first month of the campaign with an ankle injury and then has seen his side concede a disappointing eight goals in their final three pre-season matches.
Real have already turned down a reported £15 million bid from the Etihad Stadium club for the 30-year-old Portuguese international last month and maintain that the former Porto man is not sale this summer.
However that doesn’t look like it will deter City from presenting a new bid before they start the new campaign against Newcastle United on Monday and hope that an improved £20 million offer could be enough to land the versatile defender.
Former Barcelona director of football Txiki Begiristain has reportedly flown to Madrid to try and sort out a deal. However, if the Spaniards refuse to negotiate then the kingmaker at the Etihad could look elsewhere.
City may have spent over £90 million on attacking talent but have been linked with moves for Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos and have also looked at the possibility of bringing in Paolo Cannavaro from Napoli.
With the season days away, Pellegrini confirmed he wants to get a transfer completed soon, and said: “We’ll see next week if I can bring in the player I need.
“We have conceded too many goals and we will have to find ways to fix that.”
