Manchester City fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the decision of their long-term transfer target after Borussia Dortmund handed him an ultimatum.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Borussia Dortmund are determined to keep hold of Ilkay Gundogan as City’s decision to make a bid for the German international hangs in the balance.
The 25-year-old is seen as priority in the up and coming transfer window for City and in March his uncle and agent Ilkay Gundogan reportedly met with the new boss Pep Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain ahead of a potential move.
City were in line to trigger Gundogan’s £23 million release clause but now that they are aware of his dislocated kneecap the deal is no longer set in stone. And with just over 12 months remaining on his current contract, Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has put pressure on the midfielder and asking for him to make a decision.
“I have spoken to him, he’s very down after another serious injury. He knows we’ll stand by him. There are two options, which we have discussed with Ilkay for a while. Either he leaves or he stays and extends his contract, but it must be long-term.”
