The European Championship finalists were decided this week as France beat Germany 2-0, to ensure the host nation will go on to face Portugal in Paris on Sunday. The staff here at the Football Transfer Tavern are expecting a busy weekend, but are also eager to hear which Euro 2016 stars fans want to see at their club.
As the tournament continues, over in Manchester Pep Guardiola is looking for new recruits to rejuvenate an ageing Man City squad.
The likes of Toure, Zabaleta, Kolarov and Joe Hart all have question marks over their heads, with many speculating Guardiola is going to be eyeing some quality, younger replacements to pursue the title next season.
What better place to scout than on the biggest stage of them all. You can be sure Pep will be eyeing up some of the French and Portuguese talent this weekend at the Euro 2016 final.
Here are THREE European Championship finalists that should be at the top of Guardiola’s wish list…
At 29, perhaps you would expect Dimitri Payet to be a little too old for Guardiola’s taste, with the Frenchman set to turn 30 next March.
However age is just a number, as they say, and with the talent shown during the last Premier League campaign with West Ham and his continued outstanding performances with France this tournament, perhaps Pep might make an exception.
He scored 9 goals and assisted 12 in the league last season and is 3rd top goal scorer in Euro 2016 with 3 goals and 2 assists. The Frenchman has thrived over the last year, and judging by this years European Championships he is showing no signs of slowing down.
An absolute bargain for The Hammers at £10.4m, he is likely to put a much more significant dent in Guardiola’s budget this summer if the former Barcelona manager wants to lure Payet to the Ethiad this summer.
Despite distancing themselves from N’Golo Kante in May, it is hard to believe that any top club is not keeping their eye on the French midfielder this summer.
He was the epitome of everything that was successful about Leicester last season, producing emphatic displays game after game, with an engine that never seemed to run out of fuel.
Still refusing to take a pit stop, the 25-year-old has spent much of his time in the French first team at Euro 2016 and is a key reason why they have reached the final this summer.
If Guardiola was to show some concrete interest, Kante would likely run from Paris to Manchester on Monday morning, and could become an indispensable player for the Sky Blues next season.
With lots of questions surrounding the future of Joe Hart, even more so after his poor displays for England this summer, Guardiola would be looking for some real quality to replace the Englishman between the sticks next season.
One name likely to make it onto everyone’s list of top goalkeepers in the world is Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris.
Still relatively young for a goalkeeper at 29, the assured shot stopper would be a perfect replacement if Hart does move on.
Securing 13 clean sheets and making 87 saves in 37 appearances, the Frenchman could be a crucial asset to Guardiola.
Guardiola’s reported to have an unlimited transfer budget this summer, so the high fee Spurs would likely demand should not be a problem.
City fans, what do you make of this list? Is there anyone you would have put in your three? Let us know in the comments below…
