Manchester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the remainder of the summer transfer window, what with their team likely on the lookout for reinforcements in a bid to maintain their Premier League dominance next season.
Pep Guardiola’s men won the English top-flight at a canter this season in accumulating 100 points from their 38 league games, in turn setting a new points record, amongst others, over the course of the campaign. However, their rivals are likely to improve over the summer in a bid to bridge the gap to the Citizens, so it will be up to Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy to do likewise to ensure City still sit top of the pile in 12 months’ time.
As such, there are many excited Citizens supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom have been keeping tabs on the progress made by Everton youngster Ademola Lookman in the Bundesliga, having joined RB Leipzig on loan back in January.
And with the England Under-20 World Cup winner performing well in Germany, many feel that £4.5 million-rated City wonderkid Phil Foden (as per Transfermarkt) should follow his compatriot’s lead by seeking a loan move to the German top-flight next season.
Ultimately, it was Lookman himself who instigated a move to RB Leipzig back in January, what with Everton boss at the time Sam Allardyce not keen on sending him to the Bundesliga – he was also linked with Championship side Derby County.
But the 20-year-old has certainly reaped the rewards of his insistence by scoring five goals and laying on four assists for Leipzig in just 11 appearances for the club, including the winner in a 1-0 success over Borussia Monchengladbach, alongside the equaliser to preserve a point against Werder Bremen.
Thus, his loan move to the Bundesliga, and his persistence in getting it, has certainly worked out for Lookman, who will return to Everton a much better player, and thus perhaps ready to break into the first team on a regular basis.
And given Foden’s immense talent and potential, a loan move to the German top-flight could have a similar effect on him.
The 17-year-old has been in and around the first team this term in making ten senior appearances for Guardiola’s side, but he simply isn’t going to command regular football under the Spaniard at the present time such is the plethora of attacking talent at the Etihad Stadium.
And while being around a quality manager in Guardiola as well as quality players will no doubt help Foden’s development, playing games is the only way he can put what he learns from them into practice – that isn’t likely to happen at City.
But with many goals for the club’s Under-18 side and indeed the development squad in the last few seasons, it’s clear that the England Under-17 World Cup winner is clearly destined for big things – he just need somewhere to show it on a regular basis.
And based on Lookman’s efforts in Germany this season, the 17-year-old should seek to follow his lead and eye a loan move to the Bundesliga next time round.
