As ever, life is pretty good amongst the Manchester City fans propping up the bar here in the Transfer Tavern. Indeed, having progressed through to the FA Cup 4th round after a win over Burnley, our resident Citizens are full of confidence.
In fact, that’s only been added to following reports from Goal. They claim the Sky Blues have been locked in negotiations with Arsenal since Friday over a potential deal to take Alexis Sanchez to the Etihad this month after a move in the summer broke down.
The Chilean is out of contract at the end of the campaign and an injury to Gabriel Jesus had our local Sky Blues hoping Pep Guardiola would resurrect a move for the former Barcelona forward. According to the report, that’s exactly what has happened.
While the Premier League leaders aren’t thought to want to match a reported £35m asking price for Sanchez it is claimed that insiders believe they can wrap up a deal for around £25m. The player himself is understood to be confident of a transfer, with Txiki Begiristain reportedly in talks with the Gunners over the course of the weekend.
As City prepare to mount a challenge for the Champions League, this is very welcome news indeed.
The Premier League title is clearly wrapped up right now and bringing Sanchez in to compete with Sergio Aguero for a central striking berth would make Guardiola’s men favourites for the Champions League. To land him for £25m would be even better, though you have to wonder what Arsenal were thinking in not letting him go for almost double that in the summer.
