Manchester City continued their great start to the season with a 6-1 demolition job against Huddersfield.

Despite losing Kevin De Bruyne to injury, Pep Guardiola opted to leave Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez on the bench for the visit from the Terriers. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring with a fine finish before Gabriel Jesus doubled their advantage. David Silva added to the scoreline with a fantastic free-kick before Aguero completed his hat-trick to secure a memorable victory.

Despite the Argentine grabbing the headlines, only Alan Shearer has scored more hat-tricks in the Premier League, the performance of Benjamin Mendy was extremely impressive. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Frenchman joined the Citizens from Monaco last summer in a £51m deal. However, he missed the majority of the season due to a knee injury. Now back to full fitness, the 24-year-old is showing what City fans missed out on last year.

Against Huddersfield, Mendy was immense. The Terriers were unable to cope with his constant marauding down the left flank which created space for City’s creative players to operate in. Not only defensively sound, but he is also a huge attacking threat. The World Cup winner completed three dribbles, three key passes and picked up one assist from left-back against David Wagner’s men (Twitter). He provided 12 crosses in the match – no player has managed more in a Premier League game this season.

If City are to become the first side since Manchester United in 2009 to retain their Premier League title, Mendy will be crucial to their success.
