Manchester City have been rocked by news that Benjamin Mendy could face three months on the sidelines.
The Frenchman arrived from Monaco last summer and made an excellent start to life in England before suffering a serious injury which required surgery. After missing the majority of the campaign, Mendy quickly made up for lost time this season before another injury has curtailed his progress. The France international now faces up to three months on the treatment table after going under the knife again in Barcelona last week.
Pep Guardiola is adamant that City won’t be opening their chequebook in the January transfer window but could be tempted to add more cover on the left side of his defence.
One man who should be on his shortlist is Lille starlet – Fode Ballo-Toure. Valued at just £3.15m by Transfermarkt, the youngster graduated from Paris St Germain’s youth academy but failed to earn a place in the first-team and opted to join Lille. The youngster broke into the starting eleven last year, making 27 appearances in Ligue 1 and has started in all 13 fixtures so far this season despite being just 21-years-old.
The defender has been in fine form in France and puts defence first. Ballo-Toure has averaged an incredible 2.2 tackles and 1.6 interceptions this season; he would add excellent cover for Mendy on the left side. Still developing and improving, playing alongside the likes of Vincent Kompany could do wonders for his development. Learning from his countryman Mendy would also help the starlet to take his game to the next level (WhoScored).
If his impressive performances continue, it won’t be long before Europe’s top clubs come calling for his signature – City must ensure they are at the front of the queue.
