The Manchester City fans are feeling positive in the Transfer Tavern ahead of their clash against Leicester City this evening.
Pep Guardiola welcomes Claude Puel and his Leicester side – without the presence of Riyad Mahrez – to the Etihad Stadium this evening with every hope of taking another step towards the Premier League title. The Citizens faithful will be relieved that Leicester may be without Mahrez, as they don’t have to look too far into the past to remember a special match-winning performance from the Algerian on the Etihad turf during Leicester’s historic title-winning season.
As a spectacle, the evening fixture will certainly miss Mahrez’s presence on the field as his impact would undoubtedly give The Foxes a much greater chance of victory against the league-leaders. City have an all-important Champions League clash to consider on Tuesday evening as they travel to Switzerland to face Basel, but Guardiola has little by way of depth to rotate his squad too drastically for Leicester’s visit.
It goes without saying that the Leicester City supporters will be fearing what level of impact City’s talisman and arguably star of the season so far Kevin De Bruyne will have on proceedings, however, the travelling fans should be worried about how another one of their opponents midfield talents will perform, namely Bernardo Silva (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt).
Silva has had to be patient this season and bide his time settling in, but his form in recent weeks strongly suggests the agile Portuguese midfielder has turned a corner in his development at the club. The 23-year-old has started City’s last 4 fixtures in all-competitions and provided 3 assists for his teammates in the process to take his tally to 10 for the season.
With David Silva’s involvement in the game heavily in doubt due to a suspected injury and personal reasons, it is up to Bernardo to fill the creative void left by his namesake and find a way to unlock a resolute Leicester defence. Considering his recent form, Silva should have no problem in exploiting space between the lines of his opponents’ defence both with and without the ball, and his influence on proceedings could prove to be the most devastating in City blue.
