Manchester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking ahead to the summer transfer window, what with their team eyeing up reinforcements that can continue their domination of the Premier League next season, and indeed make further ground in the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s men won the English top-flight with relative ease in accumulating 100 points from their 38 matches, ending up a staggering 19 points clear of second place and nearest rivals Manchester United. Yet given they were unable to make huge strides in the Champions League, having lost to Liverpool in the quarter-finals, additions will likely be needed over the summer to give the Citizens a better chance in Europe next term.
And one man who could be on his way to the Etihad Stadium is 18-year-old Matthijs de Ligt, with recent reports suggesting that Guardiola is looking at the Dutch defender as the ideal replacement for Vincent Kompany.
However, the Spaniard should forget about de Ligt, as he already has the ideal Kompany replacement at City in the form of January signing Aymeric Laporte.
Ultimately, the Citizens spent big money on the 23-year-old during the winter window in a bid to bolster their central defensive ranks, and his first six months in English football suggest that he could be destined for big things at the North West club.
Although he hasn’t featured quite as regularly as he may have hoped, the centre back’s 13 appearances for Guardiola’s side have shown him to be hugely adept on the ball and also very strong defensively – exactly the traits that Kompany has shown throughout his time at the Etihad.
And at the tender age of 23, Laporte could be, alongside fellow 23-year-old John Stones, the future of Guardiola’s backline to suggest that they aren’t really in need of de Ligt this summer, even if he has seriously impressed at Ajax.
Ultimately, the City chief broke the transfer record for a defender in acquiring Laporte back in January, a signing for both the present, given the injury crisis he had at City at the time, and indeed the future, for life after current captain Kompany.
Thus, Guardiola should forget about de Ligt, because he already has the ideal Kompany replacement at the Etihad Stadium in the form of supremely talented Laporte.
