According to a report in The Daily Mirror, Manchester City are on the verge of securing the signatures of Riyad Mahrez and Jorginho. 27-year-old Mahrez is set to leave Leicester City six months after the Citizens thought they had their man, whilst Napoli’s Jorginho has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium for a while now, and finally looks set to put pen-to-paper on a deal with the Premier League champions.

And while many of our resident City fans in the Tavern appear to be more excited by Mahrez’s arrival, given the fact that Fernandinho is 33, and indeed the lack of a genuine alternative to the Brazil international, there is no doubt that Jorginho’s addition would be a bigger summer signing than the Leicester ace.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, there is no questioning how influential and effective 27-year-old Mahrez has been during his time at Leicester in the Premier League, not least in their most unlikely of title triumphs back in 2016 in which the attacker scored 17 goals and laid on ten assists for the Foxes, which landed him the PFA Player of the Year award.

And with 12 goals and 11 assists for the Midlands club last time round, Mahrez has continued to produce the goods at the King Power Stadium, but City are already well-stocked in the attacking department with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, and Bernardo Silva.

Yes, Mahrez’s addition will no doubt bolster and strengthen those ranks, but Jorginho’s arrival is a bigger signing given he would become the ideal alternative to Fernandinho, something City don’t really have at the club at present.

Brazil international Fernandinho has been absolutely brilliant for the North West club since his arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2013, with the midfielder playing a vital part in their two Premier League title successes in the last four years.

And while the likes of Sterling and Sane, to name but a few, received most of the plaudits last season, Fernandinho’s ability to provide a platform from which to build and launch attacks in the middle was just as integral – Guardiola stated that he was one of the top three midfielders in the world back in November.

But at the age of 33, and given how crucial that position is in Guardiola’s team, the Spaniard was right to target a more defensive-minded midfielder this summer, not only to provide Fernandinho with competition, but also as a nod to the long term – Jorginho is exactly that.

So while Mahrez’s imminent arrival is likely to excite City fans more than Jorginho’s, the addition of the £45 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), given the lack of options in that position alongside the age at which Fernandinho is at, is a bigger one than that of the Leicester star.
