Manchester City supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the summer transfer window, what with their side eyeing up reinforcements to take them up another level next season.
Pep Guardiola’s men won the Premier League title at a canter this term in finishing with 100 points from their 38 matches, winning 32 times and losing on just two occasions. However, the Citizens once again failed to make a meaningful impact in the Champions League in bowing out to Liverpool in the quarter-finals, and the pressure will be on Guardiola to take the club further in Europe’s elite competition next time round.
And one man who could be brought in to help with that aim is Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, what with recent reports suggesting that a deal to bring the winger to the Etihad Stadium is close to completion.
However, for a reported £75 million, their money could be better spent elsewhere, not least on Napoli midfielder Jorginho as a possible long-term replacement for Fernandinho.
Ultimately, while there is little doubting that Mahrez has genuine quality in the Premier League, and as such would add a great deal to City’s attacking ranks, it’s difficult to see how he would fit in the starting eleven.
Both Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling enjoyed stellar seasons at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 37 goals and laying on 36 assists between them, while the influential duo of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva are arguably the first names on teamsheet.
Add in Bernando Silva, alongside the hugely clinical striking duo of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, and Mahrez will struggle to command regular football – and for £75 million, one would surely want to spend that on a first teamer.
As such, spending £75 million on Napoli’s Jorginho would make much more sense, as it’s clear that the defensive midfield ranks is the one area at City that is in need of strengthening.
Yes, Fernandinho was excellent for the Citizens this term and played an integral part in their success, but take him out of the eleven, and there isn’t anyone quite like him in Guardiola’s squad. And at the age of 33, that problem will become a reality sooner rather than later.
And given that midfield role is such a pivotal one in the Spaniard’s team, they need a seriously talented individual to fill Fernandinho’s shoes, both in the present and the future – Jorginho could be that man.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed a fine season with the Italian outfit and played a key part in helping them run Juventus close in the race for the Serie A title, netting twice and laying on four assists in 33 league appearances.
Thus, with ability both on the ball in helping to launch attacks, alongside calibre off it in breaking up play and making things tick in the middle, he is exactly what City would want from any long-term Fernandinho replacement.
As such, the Citizens should save the £75 million they plan to spend on Mahrez by investing it in a move for Jorginho this summer.
