Guardiola approves £39m bid for Frenchman as Man City close on La Liga star

Aymeric Laported

The Manchester City fans who are gathered at the pool table in The Transfer Tavern are discussing reports that the club are set to make a bid for a new defender.

Spanish news outlet Cadena SER (via talkSPORT) claim that the Premier League side are to bid £39 million for Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte.

The French Under 21 international is reportedly set to become the first big signing of Pep Guardiola’s reign at the club with the iconic manager believed to be a massive fan of the 22-year old.

The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach is believed to be looking for players who can comfortably control the ball with their feet as he looks to shore up what was a leaky defence for the club last season.

Noted for his penchant in passing the ball, the 45-year old Champions League winner appears hell bent on drafting in more elegant stars as he plots his major overhaul.

Despite his age, the Bilbao pass master has made 149 appearances for Bilbao and scored on seven occasions, emerging as one of the most formidable defenders in La Liga during his short career.

Our landlord in The Tavern believes that Laporte has the capabilities to become one of the world’s best defenders in years to come and if City manage to bring him to England it would show a signal of intent from Guardiola.

As for the Manchester City fans they are delighted to be linked with the Frenchman and think he would add the pace at the back which the club have been lacking in recent seasons.

Will Guardiola win the league in his first season with City?
